* » Abstract |
Multibeam data were collected using a Simrad EM300 30-kHz sonar aboard NOAA Ship Hi'ialakai, a 68-m (218') NOAA research vessel, from January 26 to April 22, 2015 during cruise HA-15-01. Multibeam data were acquired at Johnston, Howland, Baker, Jarvis, and Palmyra in the Pacific Remote Island Areas, and Swains and Tutuila in American Samoa. The multibeam data were collected using Kongsberg SIS software in the *.all format and processed using SABER and QPS Qimera editing software. Surface sound velocity values were supplied by Seabird SBE-45 MicroTSG and a SBE-38, and motion corrections from a TSS/Applanix POS MV (Model 320 Version 4) vertical reference were applied to the data in real time. WGS84 datum. The vessel is equipped with a sound velocity profiler; however, no casts were acquired during mapping operations. Attempts were made to improve vertical fit of the EM300 data by using sound velocity profile data from other sources (data from previous cruises, and synthetic data derived from World Ocean Atlas using velocipy); however, these alternatives were not effective. Resulting vertical discrepancies with pre-existing surfaces are ±10m; however, the EM300 data cover deep depths (up to 4800m) and therefore these errors were considered acceptable. The EM300 data only covered new terrain around Howland and Baker islands, and therefore only the data for these areas have been processed. Depths mapped range from ~50 m to 4800 m. These data are not to be used for navigation. |
* Purpose |
The Pacific Islands Deep-Sea Coral and Sponge Initiative (PICSI) aimed to map and characterize deep-sea coral and sponge ecosystems of the Pacific Marine National Monuments in select areas of the U.S. Pacific Islands through systematic field surveys that utilize bathymetry and other seascape features to prioritize survey locations. Data collected by the NOAA Ecosystem Sciences Division (ESD) in 2015 was intended to gap-fill pre-existing bathymetry coverage around the U.S. Pacific Islands visited during ESD's Pacific Reef Assessment and Monitoring Program cruise to the Pacific Remote Island Areas and American Samoa. |

• Supplemental Information |
The Hi'ialakai's survey sensors include a 30 kHz Simrad EM300 sonar and a 300 kHz Simrad EM3002d sonar, which measure bathymetry and acoustic backscatter imagery. However, as a result of concerns associated with the EM3002d sonar and deviations from data acquisition protocols (e.g., no sound velocity profiles), and considering the newly acquired data only covered areas previously surveyed, the data acquired with the EM3002d sonar will not be archived. |

NOAA Coral Reef Ecosystem Program (CREP) Data Sharing Recommendations, version 9.0 updated August 12, 2015: CREP welcomes the opportunity to collaborate on research issues contributing to the scientific basis for better management of marine ecosystems. CREP has a very diverse set of field activities that generates large volumes of data using an array of data collection protocols. The following recommendations are for your consideration as you use this data: 1) Data analyses should take all field exigencies into account. The most effective way to do this would be active collaboration with CREP principal investigators. 2) In all presentations, product releases, or publications using data generated by CREP, proper acknowledgement of both CREP and the individuals responsible for data collection is expected. Citing the DOI (if available) is preferred, a non-DOI example is listed below. 3) If you collect or generate data for the same study areas, CREP requests that you share relevant information on complimentary data collections. 4) Those receiving data are strongly urged to inform the CREP Data Management Team of any errors and discrepancies that are discovered during the course of using these data. They are further urged to bring to the attention of the Team all problems and difficulties encountered in using these data. This information is necessary in order to improve the collections and to facilitate more efficient and economical data processing and retrieval. The users are asked to supply copies of any missing data that may be located, and to provide information as to significant subsets and special aggregations of data that are developed in using the material provided. Example citation: "This publication makes use of data products provided by the Ecosystem Sciences Division, Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center (PIFSC), National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), with funding support from the NOAA Coral Reef Conservation Program (CRCP) and the Pacific Islands Deep Sea Coral and Sponge Initiative. The analysis and interpretations presented here are solely that of the current authors.” |

Completeness Report |
As a result of concerns associated with the EM3002d sonar and deviations from data acquisition protocols (e.g., no sound velocity profiles), and considering the newly acquired data only covered areas previously surveyed, the data acquired with the EM3002d have not been archived. All raw EM300 data were archived; however, EM300 data only covered new terrain around Howland and Baker islands, and therefore only the data for these areas have been processed and incorporated into map products. |
Conceptual Consistency |
These data are believed to be logically consistent though no tests were performed |
» Quality Control Procedures Employed |
- Surface sound velocity values were supplied by Seabird SBE-45 MicroTSG and a SBE-38, and motion corrections from a TSS/Applanix POS MV (Model 320 Version 4) vertical reference were applied to the data in real time. - Spurious data points were removed (automated and manual) - Comparisons with previously acquired, overlapping data |

Description |
The EM 300 multibeam echo sounder is designed to do mapping from 10 m depth to beyond the continental rises, including the shallower ocean basins. It operates down to more than 5000 m depth with swath widths up to about 5000 m. Small transducers and compact electronics make the installation easy, and the system accuracy is generally well within the IHO standards. The EM 300 is a complete system. All necessary sensor interfaces, data displays for quality control and sensor calibration, seabed visualization, and data logging are a standard part of the system, as is integrated seabed acoustical imaging capability (sidescan). The nominal sonar frequency is 30 kHz with an angular coverage sector of up to 150 degrees and 135 beams per ping as narrow as 1 degree. Achievable swath width on a flat bottom will normally be up to 5.5 times the water depth. The angular coverage sector and beam pointing angles may be set to vary automatically with depth according to achievable coverage. This maximizes the number of usable beams. The beam spacing is normally equidistant with equiangle available. The EM 300 multibeam system was in production from 1997 to 2007 and was replaced with the EM 302. |

Description |
NOAA Ship Hi‘ialakai is a multipurpose oceanographic research vessel whose primary missions include coral reef ecosystem mapping, coral reef health and fish stock studies, and maritime heritage surveys in the Pacific Islands Region. A T-AGOS class vessel, Hi‘ialakai was built in 1984 for the U.S. Navy and served as the U.S. Naval Vessel Vindicator. The ship was then transferred to the U.S. Coast Guard, and finally to NOAA in 2002, when it was converted to conduct coral reef research. The ship was commissioned in the NOAA fleet in 2004. The 224-ft. ship is renowned for its work since 2004 assessing the health of coral reefs throughout the Pacific Islands. Scuba diving operations play a major role in the ship’s mission, and Hi‘ialakai is equipped for both shallow- and deep-water dive projects. The ship carries three small workboats that transfer divers to the working grounds, a 15-person dive locker to store scientific gear and equipment, and an air compressor to fill tanks. As Hi‘ialakai frequently operates in remote areas, the ship also carries a three-person, double-lock decompression chamber. In the event of a diving accident, the diver can be treated onsite. The ship supports a scientific crew of ~22 and is equipped with wet and dry labs, a computer/electronics room, and a scientific freezer. Data collection systems include an acoustic current Doppler profiler, CTDs and water samples, a thermosalinograph, and two Kongsberg multibeam echosounders (EM300 and EM3002d). The ship supported multibeam mapping operations across the Pacific Island Regions primarily between 2004 and 2008. In addition to supporting NOAA projects, Hi‘ialakai works in partnership with the University of Hawaii, State of Hawaii, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The ship is homeported at the NOAA Marine Operations Center-Pacific Islands in Honolulu. |
