This data set was used to explore advanced technologies using Fourier transform near infrared (FT-NIR) spectroscopy coupled with machine learning to estimate fish age more rapidly and with greater efficiency than traditional approaches.The data set integrates two key data modalities that are related to fish ages: the entire range of wavenumbers of FT-NIR spectra and corresponding biological and geospatial data for a total of 2613 northern rockfish (Sebastes polyspinis) specimens.

* Purpose

This data set was used to train this model: Benson, I.M., Helser, T.E., Barnett, B.K., 2024. Fourier transform near infrared spectroscopy of otoliths coupled with deep learning improves age prediction for long-lived northern rockfish. Fisheries Research. Manuscript recommended for publication, pending revisions.

Notes

Each row represents a unique specimen with various associated measurements. The first row contains the variable names.

Data Set Credit Combined northern rockfish otoliths were collected during biennial bottom trawl surveys conducted by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center in the Gulf of Alaska (GOA) in the years 2013, 2015, 2017, and 2019 and in the Aleutian Islands (AI) in the years 2016 and 2018. Fish length, sex, and geographic coordinates were collected at the same time as otoliths. The Age and Growth Program at the Alaska Fisheries Science Center collected otolith weights and fish ages using traditional methods.
