Summary
The Field Journal is a daily log of research activities, typically in a bound notebook, maintained for each island and year over the course of field seasons since 1982. Minimally, the daily entry should include the date, survey types and observers, weather, and highlight major events (observed male aggression, seal births, tagging, major injuries, deaths, ship arrivals, camp setup or breakdown, activities that preclude regular data collection, etc. Journal entries may also include artwork and field camp life stories if the writer in inclined.

Abstract: |
The Field Journal is a daily log of research activities, typically in a bound notebook, maintained for each island and year over the course of field seasons since 1982. Minimally, the daily entry should include the date, survey types and observers, weather, and highlight major events (observed male aggression, seal births, tagging, major injuries, deaths, ship arrivals, camp setup or breakdown, activities that preclude regular data collection, etc. Journal entries may also include artwork and field camp life stories if the writer in inclined. |
Purpose: |
The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) is the lead agency responsible for the recovery of the Hawaiian monk seal. Each year the NMFS Pacific Islands Fisheries Science Center, Protected Species Division, Hawaiian Monk Seal Research Program conducts studies at the main breeding sites to provide information necessary to evaluate (1) the status and trends of the monk seal subpopulations, (2) natural history traits such as survival, reproduction, growth, behavior, and feeding habits, and (3) the success of various activities designed to facilitate population growth. The Field Journal is a daily log of research activities over the course of the field season, maintained for each island and year. |
