These data have been collected or estimated for important economic variables such as cost, employment, and factor income (labor income and capital) for Alaska fisheries. The data thus collected or estimated have been used to develop regional economic models for Alaska fisheries in order to estimate the economic impacts of Alaska fisheries. |
| Purpose: |
Regional or community economic analysis of proposed fishery management policies is required by the Magnuson-Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act (MSA), National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), and Executive Order 12866, among others. For example, National Standard 8 (MSA Section 301[a][8]) explicitly requires that, to the extent practicable, fishery management actions minimize economic impacts on fishing communities. To satisfy these mandates and inform policymakers and the public of the likely regional economic impacts associated with fishery management policies, economists need appropriate economic models. There are many regional economic models in the literature available for use Alaska fisheries. However, there do not exist reliable regional economic data for US fisheries, in general, and Alaska fisheries, in particular. The purpose of collecting or estimating the data is to meet this data need. |
