Abstract

We conducted surveys of trap distributions, targeted habitats, trap damage to coral reefs and associated habitats, and spatial/temporal distribution of catches. Field work was conducted with local partners: FWCC in Florida Keys (this data set); UPR-M in Puerto Rico; and USVI Fish and Wildlife Div. in US Virgin Islands.

Distribution Information

No Distributions available.

Access Constraints:

none

Use Constraints:

The National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) Galveston Laboratory Fishery Ecology Branch compiled this data set in order to develop a scientific basis for understanding coral reef ecosystem dynamics and for refining essential fish habitat designation for future amendments to fishery management plans. NMFS is not responsible for any uses of these data sets beyond those for which they were intended, and NMFS makes no claims regarding the accuracy of any data provided by agencies or individuals outside NMFS. NMFS does not approve, recommend, or endorse any proprietary product or proprietary material mentioned in these files. Dataset credit requested and NMFS would appreciate recognition as the resource from which these data were obtained in any publications and/or other representations of these data.

Process Step 1

CC ID: 195376
Description:

Investigators conducted boat-based surveys per prescribed methodology to locate surface buoys attached to traps, targeting either lobster or stone crab. Locations of trap buoys were recorded with a handheld GPS. Traps were generally observed with an underwater video camera to document location and habitat. A subset of traps were surveyed by SCUBA divers to assess damage to habitats or structural organisms including hard and soft corals, sponges, alga, and seagrasses. Location data were plotted in GIS project with habitat layers from NOAA Benthic Habitat Maps.
