Summary
In 2010, the Deepwater Horizon oil spill occurred in the Gulf of Mexico and the Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA) was initiated to determine extent of damage to the resources and habitat of the area impacted by the spill. The Southeast Fisheries Science Center Mississippi Laboratories has collected standardized data in the Gulf of Mexico since the 1980s through various fisheries resource surveys. These data were provided to the NRDA for inclusion as a baseline dataset on the health of the Gulf of Mexico ecosystem prior to the oil spill. Specifically, long-term data was provided from longline, groundfish trawl and ichthyoplankton surveys. Samples for sensory and oil/dispersant analyses were also collected in conjunction with existing surveys during and following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Samples were transported to the Mississippi Laboratories within one week for sensory analysis by the National Seafood Inspection Laboratory and for oil and dispersant analysis by the Northwest Fisheries Science Center.

Abstract: |
Purpose: |
To provide historical fisheries resource data to support the Natural Resources Damage Assessment (NRDA) in response to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill which occurred in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010; and to monitor the health and safety of Gulf of Mexico resources during and following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. |
