Abstract:

Effects of hydraulic shellfish harvesting on sediment chemistry and bivalve abundance was examined on a leased, cultivated clam bed near Milford, Connecticut in the central basin of Long Island Sound. The clam bed was divided into two 2-ha plots, one was hydraulically dredged by commercial clam boat in January 2013 and one remained not dredged to serve as a control. Both plots were further subdivided into 9 boxes for spatially randomized sampling. Pore-water chemistry and sediment grain size were measured on 3 occasions over the study period from July to October 2013. Four sampling trips to obtain benthic sediment using a Smith McIntyre grab were conducted over the same time interval.
