This data set contains sensitive biological resource data for marine and estuarine submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), coral reefs, algae, and hardbottom communities in Northwest Peninsular Florida. Vector polygons in this data set represent the aforementioned sensitive biological resource data. Species-specific abundance, seasonality, status, life history, and source information are stored in associated data tables (described below) designed to be used in conjunction with this spatial data layer. This data set is a portion of the ESI data for Northwest Peninsular Florida. As a whole, the ESI data characterize the marine and coastal environments and wildlife by their sensitivity to spilled oil, and include information for three main components: shoreline habitats, sensitive biological resources, and human-use resources.

Process Steps:

  • 2016-12-01 00:00:00 - Benthic habitats mapped include submerged aquatic vegetation (SAV), algae, coral reefs, and hardbottom communities. The best available SAV data at the time of mapping came from the FWC and the Southwest Florida Water Management District (SWFWMD). Data from Anclote Keys to the northern end of the region came from the FWC. The FWC SAV data set is a conglomeration of digital data from surveys completed between 1992 and 2010. The most up to date survey data replaced older data in this data set, and older data (eg. 1992) was only included in areas where more recent data were not available. North of the Anclote Keys, the concentration values "patchy" and "continuous" were added based on information in this data set. Data on SAV from the Anclote Keys to the southern end of the region came from 2014 data from the SWFWMD. These data were broken up by Florida Land Use, Cover and Forms Classification System codes 9113 (discontinuous seagrass), 9116 (continuous seagrass), and 9121 (algae). These values were used to populate the name and concentration values for this region. In addition to SAV, coral and hardbottom areas were mapped with the mapping qualifier "High Ecological Value". These habitats support reef communities of subtropical fish, corals, algae, mollusks, sponges, and crustaceans.
