Habitat and Groundfish Ecology Cooperative Research in the California Current

We engage the fishing community in scientific research to improve our understanding on nearshore groundfish ecology.

A group within the SWFSC Fisheries Ecology Division's Habitat and Groundfish Ecology Team.

Overview

Our group works in partnership with the sportfishing industry to collect biological data of rockfish species to inform life-history parameters and provide more accurate population and reproductive output estimates for federal groundfish stock assessments.

Cooperative Projects

  1. Targeted groundfish collection trips to understand rockfish reproduction and improve reproductive output models.
  2. Cooperative sampling of groundfish carcasses from California’s sportfishing fleet to improve age, length and maturity data for stock assessments.
  3. Monitoring nearshore fish stocks inside and outside of California’s Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) with the California Collaborative Fisheries Research Program (CCFRP).
  4. Upcoming: Can Tissue collected by citizen science shed light on the vermilion and sunset rockfish cryptic species pair in California?
