NOAA Fisheries is requesting nominations for the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel to fill 12 seats for 3-year appointments.

What is the role of the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel?

NOAA Fisheries consults with and considers the comments and views of the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel when preparing and implementing fishery management plans or amendments for Atlantic tunas, swordfish, sharks, and billfish.

What qualifications do I need to serve on the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel?

Qualifications for membership includes experience in one of more of the following:

  • Atlantic highly migratory species recreational fisheries
  • Atlantic highly migratory species commercial fisheries
  • Fishery-related industries, such as marinas or bait and tackle shops
  • The scientific community working with Atlantic highly migratory species
  • The environmental community, academia, or non-governmental organizations knowledgeable about Atlantic highly migratory species and/or related fisheries

Which sector vacancies must be filled?

To ensure the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel continues to reflect an appropriate and equitable balance and mix of interests, we are specifically seeking to fill the following sector vacancies:

  • Four commercial
  • Four recreational
  • One environmental
  • Three academic

Who can submit nominations?

Anyone may submit a nomination, including self-nominations, for membership on the Atlantic Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel.

Nominations should include:

  1. The name and contact information of the nominee (mailing address, email address, and phone number)
  2. A description of the nominee’s interest in highly migratory species or highly migratory species fisheries, or in specific species like tunas, swordfish, sharks, or billfish
  3. A statement of the nominee’s background and/or qualifications
  4. A written commitment to actively and ethically participate in the Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel meetings and tasks
  5. A list of outreach resources the nominee has to support their role on the Highly Migratory Species Advisory Panel
